Private label is often sold as a simple upgrade: send a logo, print a box, and the product becomes a brand. In practice, each branding layer can have a different supplier, lead time and minimum quantity.

Start with the lowest-complexity brand layer that does the job

A printed sticker, belly band, insert card, hang tag or simple logo application may be enough for an early product. Fully custom rigid boxes, molded components or special hardware make more sense when sales volume can support the setup cost and MOQ.

Confirm who makes the packaging

The product factory may produce packaging internally, outsource it, or ask you to coordinate a separate packaging supplier. That affects pricing, lead time and who is responsible when artwork or dimensions are wrong.

Approve dielines and artwork carefully

Before printing, check dimensions, bleed, color mode, barcode quiet zones, legal text, product claims and the exact version of the artwork file. Do not rely on a low-resolution screenshot as final print approval.

Packaging MOQ can become inventory

If you order 1,000 printed boxes for a 200-unit product test, you are effectively carrying packaging inventory. That can be fine if the design will remain stable. It can be wasteful if product dimensions, claims or branding are still changing.

Useful first-order question

What is the simplest brand treatment that lets you test the product without locking yourself into packaging inventory you may not use?

Check the parcel after branding is added

A premium box can increase volumetric weight and damage risk. An insert can move inside the parcel. A bottle pump may need extra protection. Review packaging as a shipping component, not only a design component.

Keep a packaging specification

Record material, dimensions, print method, finish, color reference, artwork version and how the product sits inside. Repeat orders become much easier when the packaging standard is documented instead of living only in chat history.

Quick answers

Questions sellers often ask

Can I private label a small order?

Sometimes. Simple labels or stock packaging can work at lower quantities, while fully custom boxes, colors or molded components usually require larger minimums.

Who checks packaging artwork?

The seller should approve final artwork and claims. A sourcing or procurement partner can help coordinate files and supplier proofing, but brand and regulatory responsibility remains with the seller.

Does better-looking packaging always improve the product?

No. Packaging should fit the customer experience and shipping economics. Oversized or fragile packaging can increase cost and damage risk.
