A factory quotation can look profitable until the first packed carton is measured. This is especially common with cushions, pet beds, storage products, gift boxes, lightweight plastic goods and products surrounded by bulky protective packaging.
Actual weight and volumetric weight
Actual weight is what the parcel weighs on a scale. Volumetric weight converts the parcel dimensions into a chargeable weight using the carrier's divisor. Different routes and carriers can use different formulas, so the exact divisor must be confirmed with the shipping service you plan to use.
Always ask for packed dimensions
Product dimensions are not enough. A rigid retail box, protective foam, accessories and outer packaging can change the parcel size significantly. For direct-to-customer fulfillment, ask for the dimensions of one finished customer parcel. For bulk freight, ask for master-carton dimensions, quantity per carton and gross weight.
Packaging design can be a logistics decision
Reducing empty space may lower shipping cost without changing the product. Folding components, nesting parts, vacuum packing soft goods or changing insert structure can sometimes produce a better result than negotiating another few cents off the factory price.
Calculate landed cost with a realistic shipping assumption before you treat the supplier's unit price as your product cost.
Bulky products may need a different fulfillment model
A product that is unattractive for single-parcel air shipment may still work when shipped in bulk to a destination warehouse. Conversely, small high-value products may tolerate direct international fulfillment much better.
Shipping restrictions still matter
Batteries, liquids, powders, magnets and other product characteristics can restrict routes even when dimensions are small. The shipping method has to match both the parcel and the product.

Quick answers
Questions sellers often ask
What is volumetric weight?
It is a dimensional calculation carriers use to represent the space a parcel occupies. The carrier may charge the higher of actual weight or volumetric weight.
Can I calculate shipping cost from product dimensions?
Not reliably. You need the packed parcel dimensions, weight, destination, service level and route restrictions.
Can custom packaging reduce shipping cost?
Sometimes. Reducing unused space or changing how components are packed can lower billable volume, but packaging still has to protect the product.
