MOQ means minimum order quantity, but in real sourcing conversations there may be several minimums inside one quotation. That is why an apparently simple “MOQ 100 pcs” offer can change once customization is added.

Product MOQ

This is the minimum quantity the supplier is willing to produce or sell for the product itself. Stock products may have very low minimums. Custom production usually requires more because setup, material purchasing or production-line time has to be justified.

Color and variant MOQ

A 500-piece MOQ does not always mean you can order 50 pieces in ten colors. The supplier may require 100 or 200 pieces per color, size or finish. For fashion accessories, pet apparel and many household items, variant structure can matter as much as total quantity.

Packaging MOQ

Printed packaging is often made by a different factory with its own equipment and setup economics. Your product supplier may accept 100 units, while the custom box printer asks for 1,000 boxes. You need to decide whether to hold excess packaging, use a simpler label, or postpone full custom packaging until sales justify it.

Logo and process minimums

Laser engraving, embroidery, screen printing, molded logos and custom hardware can each have different setup charges and minimum quantities. Ask what process is being used. “Custom logo available” does not tell you enough.

Negotiation that actually helps

Instead of asking only “Can you lower MOQ?”, ask what changes would make a smaller test order possible: stock color, standard packaging, no logo, mixed existing variants, or a sample-plus-small-batch plan.

Do not force a tiny MOQ if it destroys the economics

A very small order can have high unit cost, expensive sample freight and poor shipping efficiency. The right first quantity is the smallest amount that can still test the real supply chain without creating an unreasonable landed cost.

Write the MOQ assumptions into the quote comparison

For each supplier, record product MOQ, per-variant MOQ, packaging MOQ, logo MOQ, sample cost and what changes at the next volume tier. This makes future scaling decisions much easier.

If MOQ is the main obstacle in your project, send the product and target quantity through our sourcing service . We can check whether the issue is the product itself or one of the customization layers.

Quick answers

Questions sellers often ask

Can MOQ always be negotiated?

No. It depends on stock availability, production setup, material purchases, customization and the supplier’s commercial policy.

Why is packaging MOQ higher than product MOQ?

Printed packaging is often produced by a separate packaging factory with its own printing and setup minimums.

Is a very low MOQ always better for a new store?

No. It reduces inventory risk but can make unit and shipping costs too high to test the product realistically.
